Money saving tips:

1. Right Refrigerant Charge.

If your electrical bill is abnormally high and your air conditioner is running for longer than 10 minutes without cooling, the cause is likely a low refrigerant charge.

You can test this yourself: just measure the temperature difference between the air at the supply register and the return filter grill. It should be 16–22°F. If that difference is smaller, an A/C contractor can add Freon to your system and, in effect, cut your air conditioning expenses by half.

Another test is to check the discharge pipe of your condensing unit (the thick one). It should be cold and sweating. If it’s not, call an A/C specialist to charge your A/C unit with Freon (refrigerant), and stay cool!

2. Sufficient Air Flow.

Another cause of that high electrical bill could be a dirty evaporator coil of your air conditioner that blocks air flow. The result is an overloaded furnace or air handler motor. You can open the evaporating coil box and clean the coil on your own, or just call an A/C contractor.

  1. Economizer.

If you are not ready to replace your air conditioner or heat pump with a new high-efficiency A/C unit, you can reduce your electrical bill with an economizer, which works as a part of your air conditioning system. When the outdoor temperature and humidity are mild, an economizer saves energy by cooling buildings with outside air rather than using air conditioning equipment to cool recirculated air.

You can use it separately, as a fresh air intake (smart fan), like the one in your car. An economizer delivers fresh air to each room using the existing duct system without the need for a whole house fan.

A properly operating economizer can cut energy costs of your air conditioner usage by as much as 20% of a building’s total energy consumption.

  1. Maintenance (tune-up)

Your air conditioning system requires maintenance if the house you reside in is 15 years or older. This is a one-time job, consisting of cleaning the indoor (evaporating) coil and blower wheel.

You need to clean just the return air duct (behind the filter) when you see too much dust there. Otherwise, you can have it replaced ($150–200).

There is no sense in cleaning the air duct because the dust layer inside the ducts after 20 years of work is the same amount that collects after just 2 years. Excess dust is blown away by the air flow.

The 170-dollar annual home service plan, which includes 2 maintenances (tune-ups) per year, is just a robbery. Your system requires service only at the beginning of the summer once every three years to check the Freon pressure and capacitor.

When you change the filter in your house at least once every three months, your system does not need any additional tune-up. That amount of maintenance is sufficient.

The motor will not burn out with a low capacitor; it just stops.

Igniter should be replaced only when it burns out.
